Flowers In The Rockies

We’ve heard from many Canada-based designers about the difficulties and expense of traveling to the floral design workshops we often mention in the US and elsewhere. So, we have a workshop opportunity to share with all BB readers, but especially our friends in Canada. Flowers in the Rockies is coming up April 28 – May 1, 2019 and will be held at Creekside Villa in Canmore, Alberta, just minutes from Banff National Park! Whether you’re specifically looking for a workshop in Canada or you’re looking for a workshop in a scenic destination in hopes of enjoying a little vacation in conjunction with a professional workshop, you might find this career workshop + retreat the perfect fit.

Flowers in the Rockies is the brainchild of Canadian florist and Chapel Designer Janelle Gerestein (Janie) of Flowers by Janie in Calgary. The workshop/retreat is geared towards wedding and event floral designers looking to gain new business and design skills and be inspired to a new level of creativity by designing amid the majestic Rockies. Because Janie works alongside her husband Oscar, a professional videographer, attendees will have the unique opportunity of receiving short video clips of their work from the workshop! Check out some of the other plans Janie has in store for attendees below. Hope you can make it!

Mayesh Design Star Workshop | Salt Lake City

What a pleasure it’s been for us to share the beautiful floral installations, bouquets, and tablescapes from the 2018 Mayesh Design Star Workshop series. From the outstanding Mayesh blooms to the stunning light-filled venues and beautiful photography, each workshop provided us with inspiration we were happy to pass on to our Botanical Brouhaha audience. And judging from the responses we received, we think you enjoyed the inspiration, too! Today, we’re taking a peek into the last 2018 workshop with Kaylee Young just as the 2019 workshop series with Shean Strong gets solidly underway. Enjoy! The model (who happens to be Kaylee’s sister), the Emily Riggs gown, the flowers…definitely one of our favorite shoots!

The last workshop of 2018 came full circle for Design Star Kaylee Young. She brought Mayesh to her hometown of Salt Lake City to wrap up an amazing year. The workshop was held at U.West SLC, a beautiful event space just a few minutes south of the heart of downtown Salt Lake City this past November.

The inspiration behind this workshop came from the current season and the ease of autumn. So many amazing products are available come fall time, and Kaylee really wanted to highlight the beautiful flowers Mayesh had to offer this time of year. Along with her two fabulous reps from Mayesh, she curated a flower order of persimmons, lilac, peonies, autumn eucalyptus, date palm beads, roses, and astrantia. The colors varied from a light cream all the way to a deep maroon. Emily Riggs provided a blush gown for the model to wear; a perfect backdrop for bouquets made in a color palette like this one. To top it all off we got the most amazing golden light of the year in photos. These simple things really made the workshop theme work perfectly.

On Monday evening, the workshop began with a networking event, where the attendees enjoyed appetizers and wine while sharing their own stories and having an opportunity to meet Kaylee and the workshop team. Kaylee then led the students in a mood boarding activity. After each student created their own mood board, they then took turns helping each other put defining words to their boards and style. This activity was a wonderful way for attendees to reflect on what inspires and motivates each of them.

On Tuesday, students dove into flower arranging. Kaylee and her assistant Jamie led the students in a group installation, creating a beautiful ceremony arch using true blue eucalyptus, autumn eucalyptus, garden roses and foraged sagebrush and dried materials.

Following the installation, Kaylee taught the class how she creates her petite and textured bouquets. One by one, the students took their bud vases from Accent Décor and added a few blooms and foliages to inspire their own arrangements, and then created their own hand tied bouquet, finished with ribbon from Adorn Company. Local photographer Tess Comrie then photographed the installation and the students’ bouquets, which were modeled by Kaylee’s sister Alex Weaver, wearing a gorgeous Emily Riggs gown.

We’re excited for 2019 to unfold with brand new learning opportunities! Click here for dates and locations of 2019 Mayesh Design Star workshops with Atlanta-based floral designer Shean Strong. Following a successful January workshop in San Diego, the remainder of this year’s workshop locations will include Nashville, Tennessee (May 20-21), Austin, Texas (August 12-13), and Columbus, Ohio (November 11-12).
