The Question:

How do you keep gardenias looking fresh in designs? How do you keep them from yellowing?

The Answers:

We seem to have a really limited supply of gardenia in the UK as cut flowers; therefore, we would only use a couple of flowers maybe for a buttonhole or in a bouquet. We tend to buy plants rather than cut flowers then nurture them in the lead up to the day of the wedding before choosing and cutting the flowers at the perfect stage of opening.

We spray the flowers with Crowning/Professional Glory as this also helps them last throughout the wedding day.

Gardenias are gorgeous but tough to work with! I try to add them into designs on the day of, preferably on site and handle them as little as possible.

We inspect the gardenia upon arrival without breaking the seal of the box. If the blooms are perfect they are put into the cooler. Any blooms that arrive that are less then perfect are immediately sent back. We open the box just before we are about to leave for the wedding. We tape the end of the stem and then do a cross wire. These blooms are inserted into our already made bouquet or we make the bouquet of all gardenias at that time. We spray the gardenias with Crowning Glory.

As we close the post today, I’d like to introduce you to a phenomenal designer (if you aren’t already acquainted with her work)…Sachi of Sachi Rose. Her designs consistently take my breath away. Enjoy!
